SERVER SUPPORT TECHNOLOGIST

JOB TITLE: SERVER SUPPORT TECHNOLOGIST (6 Month Contract to June 30th)
REPORTS TO Director, Network Services Group

JOB PURPOSE

Primary responsibilities include the development of automated production
processes with Perl, as well as the day-to-day care and feeding of our many
UNIX based systems.

KEY JOB FUNCTIONS
o Assist in the planning, design, procurement and installation of Server and
Database Hardware/Software and related equipment.
o Oversee server operating system and application upgrades, bug fixes and
patching.
o Performs Network and Server troubleshooting, diagnostics, research,
evaluation & documentation of various Servers and data communications
solutions and alternatives. Consults with technical staff, vendors &
consultants when the cause of the problem is not apparent.
o Provides in-depth problem diagnosis and recommend/document any additional
procedures as required.
o Assist with administration, maintenance and regular testing of our
emergency recovery site.
o Interact with the Application Programming group and the user community to
provide a smooth operating environment and trouble free host, network and
Internet connectivity.
o Assist in the requirements planning for implementation and expansion.
o Monitor Network, Servers and Databases, recommend changes required to
maintain optimal performance.
o Assist with management of backup and restore environment for production
servers.
o Assist in the coordination of internal Network, Server and Database
projects
o Other Responsibilities:
o Perform moderate programming and scripting tasks.
o Develop documentation for operations and senior management as required.
o Provide in-depth testing of platforms to ensure adequate fail-over
strategies.
o Train other personal as required.
o Perform other related duties as required.
o Assist in the creation and implementation of standards and procedures.
o Participate in the rotating on-call program.

BASIC SKILL LEVEL REQUIREMENTS

Education: Computer Science Degree or equivalent job experience with related
technical courses

Tools: UNIX, Autosys, Tivoli Storage Manager, Perl scripting Language,
Microsoft Suite of Products, Nagios,
Amanda, Connect Enterprise, Oracle, Apache, Tomcat, Docushare, JBoss,
Remedy, Veritas,
Sun clustering, VMware Virtual Infrastructure V3.

Experience: Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience with various Servers
(Sun, IBM) operating systems (Solaris, Linux, AIX). Strong knowledge of
procedural programming with Perl required. Sound knowledge of Veritas or Sun
clustering, high availability systems and EMC technology. Networking
experience is an asset.

o Excellent knowledge of core UNIX subsystems, e.g., DNS
